about

I wrote this song when I was feeling the lowest I’d felt in a long time. I opened my lyric book and let my pen lead and these lines fell out like it was what a higher guidance needed me to hear and know. The only lyrics that aren’t from that original twenty minutes of scrawling is the middle eight, which I found inspiration from in Rebecca Campbell’s ‘Rise Sister Rise’. Campbell is a modern-day High Priestess and her book is an extended invitation for women to rise and step into their authentic selves. Although I knew the message this section should convey, I struggled to find the words. I picked keywords from a page in her book and the section came instantly.
I produced this song the day after I was made redundant due to Coronavirus. I’ve never had a production experience like it as it came together so quickly and naturally. Similarly to the lyrical content, it was like the melody and chords were what my soul needed to hear too.
This song was so fun to produce. I wanted to create a feeling of unity and calling an army so started with the snare roll sample and built the beat from there. Orchestral music has been hugely important to my musical journey so far and my only goal with my EP was to make something completely authentic to me, without caring about the popularity of particular sounds. I knew I wanted this track to sound cinematic and dramatic and those feelings are emanated by brass. When composing classically, I usually begin with cello, as the most versatile string instrument, or the french horn, which is my favourite orchestral instrument. Combining these orchestral sounds with samples that would fall under the umbrella of PC Music made it sound really original. One of my favourite sections is the second half of the middle eight where the choir comes in. This section in the Logic project is called ‘A7X Chord Changes’ because the chord progression was inspired by ‘The Wicked End’ which features on the ‘City of Evil’ album. This album was hugely influential to me growing up and Avenged Sevenfold will probably always be one of my favourite bands. I’m excited to get to a point where I can record real orchestral instruments, although Spitfire’s BBC Symphony Orchestra VST did a great job.
Whenever I listen to this song, I feel inspired, lifted and ready to rise. I hope it does the same for other people.

lyrics

Your eyes are shining, it’s a heavenly glow. It seems you’re one of us now, don’t you know?
Let them be jealous, envy is a sin.
My wings shield you from the shade they’re throwing in.

This is perfection on the highest level,
Only God can criticise.
Bow down and watch me shine my halo,
It’s time to realise, the queen has arrived,
So call your spirit guides cos’ angels, angels never die.

I’m no messiah, no I’m no saint,
But take my hand, come, let’s fly away.
You wanna be immortal, or go to the afterlife?
But one lifetime’s enough if you do it right.

This is perfection on the highest level,
Only God can criticise.
Bow down and watch me shine my halo,
It’s time to realise, the new queen has arrived,
So call your spirit guides cos’ angels, angels never die.

The inner light, it calls us home,
With me, you’ll never be alone.
I’m the answer to all your prayers, no need to look for fun elsewhere.
I’ll touch your soul, together we rise across the globe.
Over sea, mountains, our spirit has flown.
Look inside you, home was there all along.

This is perfection on the highest level,
Only God can criticise.
Bow down and watch me shine my halo,
It’s time to realise, the new queen has arrived,
So call your spirit guides cos’ angels, angels never die.
