Ascent (Finale)

from Angels Never Die by Mouse

/

about

My favourite eight bars in the whole of the EP is in this piece. The main melody of ‘Pity Sex’ is played by a french horn over a chior and it sounds so dramatic reharmonised like it is.
Pity Sex’ is also the only song to be featured in ‘Finale’ as it represents my healing from sexual trauma. It’s followed by the pre-chorus melody of previous single ‘Escape’ because it reminds me that no matter what happens in my life, music will always be there for me to fall into. The ‘Escape’ melody is played on a child’s toy box as it represents the age I was when my life was changed by someone else’s actions.
The only reason there’s piano in there is because I’m obsessed with Native Instruments’ Una Corda. The first time I heard it was when I was working with Andrea Consoli on ‘Nothing Comes Close’ and I asked him how he’d microphone his piano when he played me a track composed using it. I couldn’t believe it wasn’t a real piano! Bookending my EP with a Finale felt like the right thing to do because it feels like what would have otherwise been an arbitrary body of work has a beginning, middle and end, just like any good story… and storytelling through music is what’s important to me.
