This song opens with a recording of a phone call between a friend and I. Originally, it started with a sample from Mean Girls, when Regina gets hit by the bus. To avoid being sued, I needed to replace it with something original. I love how this song starts because it resembles many conversations had between my friends and I, discussing how hard it is to start and maintain businesses during a pandemic.
I wrote the lyrics for this song a few years ago, after an old boss walked past me in Bristol. I was let go suddenly from a job which promised me the world in a really disrespectful way. It was probably my first experience of someone being just plain nasty in a professional environment. Heavy Crown is also about this person.
However, this song is a commentary on feminism. Women are given a set of rules to live by with the expectation that they won’t speak up if they aren’t happy with something. My solace in this situation was knowing that I wouldn’t need to be the one to fight back, karma will work in my favour anyway.
The production for this song felt really easy to me. I started with a Mellotron, which I never do, because I didn’t realise Logic had one. It was the first and probably last time I’ll use it! At times, the beat feels pretty hectic, like it’s getting ahead of itself. I think that speaks volumes about anger as an emotion; it can be so hard to reign in. Even though women are taught to!
This song also contains my favourite vocal performances on the EP, moments where I listen to it and can’t believe it’s me that sounds like that.
